Origin Of IANA
ORIGIN OF THE NAME ISSELE ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA
Indigenes of Issele-Uku came together in July of 1999 in Chigaco for our inaugural meeting. Twelve members of Issele-Uku were charged with the responsibility of drawing up a Constitution and bylaws. Part of the mandate of the 1999 Constitution Drafting Committee (CDC) was to recommend an appropriate name for the association.
The CDC, through a rigorous review process recommended the name Issele Association of North America, which was later adopted by the general membership at the 2000 National Convention in Houston Texas. The name Issele Association of North America was ratified at the 2001 National Convention in Denver Colorado.
As a matter of background, the 1999 Constitution Drafting Committee was made up of 17 members, male and female, all from Issele-Uku and yet, they consciously decided in their recommendation to include, in our constitution and by-laws, Issele-Uku, Issele-Mkpitime & Issele-Azagba as beneficiaries of our fund raising efforts. Then the birth of the Issele Association of North America (IANA) Organization occurred.
IANA is a registered non-profit (charitable) organization with its headquarters in Washington D.C. IANA was established in 1999, and has a 501C number in the United States. The association currently has 5 different Chapters across the USA. IANA holds bi-annual National Conventions.
